Ellesmere – Building Sustainability From The Ground Up
Across ABP, we are always on the lookout for ways to use our resources more efficiently. Our plant at Ellesmere offered us a unique opportunity.
Right from the original planning process, sustainability was at the heart of this re-development. Our plans included recycling materials from the original building and sourcing Green Grade ‘A’ rated materials for the new buildings. We also installed an innovative combined heat & power (CHP) engine fuelled by animal fats recovered on site – together with bio-fuels derived from used cooking oil through Olleco, our resource recovery division.
We included rainwater harvesting and a water treatment plant that takes dirty water from the site and cleans it for use in site amenities. Plus, an acoustic barrier and biodiversity corridor in the grounds to ensure we are a good neighbour and sympathetic to our ecosystem.
We also reused materials from the original building – including 55 tonnes of steels, 1900 tonnes of stone, 1500 tonnes of bricks and even 50 light fittings. Clever route planning means our trucks run at full capacity, reducing road miles and impact on the local community.
We have created a circular economy that reduces our carbon output by 7,000 tonnes a year and provides all the site’s hot water site and the majority of its electricity requirement. ABP Ellesmere is now a carbon neutral facility as certified by the Carbon Neutral Company, the first of its kind in the world.
After five years of planning, two years building and a £26 million investment, it is also the most sustainable beef processing facility in the world.
A Carbon Neutral Site
The first certified beef processing plant in Europe to achieve full carbon neutrality throughout the site
Fully Circular Economy
Renewable fuel powered CHP using tallow (produced on site) plus refined used cooking oil from our customers
1900 tonnes of stone recycled
Let nothing go to waste – we recycled stone, steel, bricks and even light fittings
40,000 road miles saved
Expert route planning and clever use of back-haul trips cut truck journeys by a massive 13,000
