Carbon Reduction

ABP commitment to carbon reduction in farming

The future of fossil fuels, especially with regard to carbon footprint, is uncertain. What is certain is the detrimental effect the world’s dependence on them has on our environment. At ABP, we are taking action – actively searching out more sustainable sources of energy to power and heat our plants.

Of course, this makes us more energy efficient. In time, it could make us more self-sufficient too, as we rely less on traditional energy sources and generate our own power.

Carbon Reduction

Reducing carbon emission is a key objective for our business, and one we’re always looking to drive forward through fresh innovation and new initiatives. We were the first company in the world to be awarded quadruple certification to the Carbon Trust Standard, recognising the impact of the measures in place across out processing sites.

The Power of the Hybrid

One example is an initiative designed to support sustainable beef production at ABP Nenagh. Historic reliance on large quantities of heavy fuel oil due to demand for hot water made the site a perfect opportunity to revolutionise our emissions.

Prioritising sustainability required an innovative solution, and the answer was the EscoPod. The EscoPod uses the latest in combined heat and power technology, creating a ‘super tri-generation’ solution with three distinct outputs: electrical power, heated water, and refrigeration – with 0% waste.

After installation in late 2015, the EscoPod now provides 95% of ABP Nenagh’s heating requirements – a 20% reduction in CO2, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. It also significantly exceeded all sustainability targets within a single year.
